I saw this on a friend’s Facebook page and wished there was a “Superlike” button. This is pretty much me all day long. I am full of random thoughts, in random places at random times. The funny thing is , is that they are not always as random as I think. Because although these thoughts present themselves as seemingly random, the majority of them are not fleeting. They pop up and stay up. I am sometimes amazed at what comes to mind but then I stay with them, mulling them over. playing with them, inviting them to stay a while and pull up a chair. And that is why I am now here writing this down in this way.
I grew up hearing about Jesus at home and at church. Then i grew up and started experiencing Jesus for myself. Because I have a relationship with Him, I have gotten to know him and can truly say that I love his forgiveness, his peace, his presence and his love for me.
Married to a man who makes me laugh! Ha is brilliant and kind. I am blessed to have him. He makes me beautiful in the ways that matter. Worth crossing an ocean for. So glad we have each other.
There are two boys in the world that amaze me, challenge me, puzzle me and amuse me within about five minutes of waking up every day! I had no idea they were going to be be this much work or this much fun.
Once upon a time…
Canadian, daughter, sister, Habs fan, Alouettes fan, class clown, music lover, oatmeal cookie maker (loads of ’em), night owl and late sleeper.
The same list above applies except I can knit now. Oh and sadly,no more late sleeping… see Mommy section above.
A white cane user, short and long. (Curious aren’t you?)
Parent learning about life on the Autistic Spectrum. (Not boring!)
I woke up this morning Saw a world full of trouble now, thought How’d we ever get so far down, and How’s it ever gonna turn around
Those are the opening lyrics of a song I heard a couple of years ago.
They are also the reason why this blog has finally gotten started.
But why a blog?
And why now?
Ok first answer because the song said so. Keep reading, you’ll see.
Second answer because I want to stop wishing I had already done this. Because there is never going to be a perfect time. And because God has been not so subtle with me lately about getting on with it. More on that another time. Let’s get back to changing the world!
In 2012 Matthew West released a song and when I first heard it a couple of years later, the first few words had me hooked.
I LOVE music and I am a lyric person. I will switch off a song with an amazing beat for lack of words that draw me in or make me want to sing along.Words matter and they are powerful, so I listened and not just with my ears.
The song had Matthew challenging himself (and me) to not just sit around and complain about our world.
It seems to be a default setting for some people and it’s understandable. The world is all kinds of crazy. And we get to hear about it all day through pings on our phone, 24 hr news channels and even standing in line for the bus as someone says, “Did you just hear what happened in __________. It’s just awful” And it is. And it feels like it will always be awful and we just have to put up with it because well what else can we do?
The answer is:Something. Do Something. Something. Right now. And then Something again tomorrow. A new Something or the same Something. But please just Something.
The song is called…… Do Something. I guess I gave it away.
Matthew West – Do Something
The video has people holding up signs with different Somethings that they could do. I counted 39 different Somethings in this video and by no means is this a complete list. But the reason I love it is because it’s diverse, it’s doable. Let me show you a few
The first Something is LAUGH.
You may have already done it today. It takes very little effort and can be easy to get started on.
Talk to a kid. They are mostly hilarious.
Find videos of sport team mascots falling over.
Laughter lifts us. It changes our mood. It brings us closer to others we share the laugh with, if only for a moment or two. You sharing a laugh could honestly brighten someone’s day. And that’s something.
Another Something on the list is VOLUNTEER.
There is a group, charity or organization that is making difference out there and you could help them do it. What do you love? What do are you good at? What would you like to see change? Do you love art, dancing, reading, knitting, cooking, caring for others, walking dogs…anything? If you care about anything, then you could share it with others who feel the same and be awesome at it together.
Now this one is very different from the laughing one. This requires planning, time, some people skills and commitment. It will also take the special skill of not talking yourself out of it or putting it of for ages….
If you are excited about the idea of volunteering then try these steps:
Write down three things you love.
Find out what is happening near you involving these things.
Think about the day and time you can set aside to give to others.
Get contact info and use it.
Call or email someone within 5 days.
Get someone to bug you about whether or not you did this stuff after all. You know nosy people, they’ll be happy to be in your business.
Another Something is SMILE.
Please don’t make me explain this.
Smile at people. Smile at babies. Smile at your kids. Smile at your neighbour. Smile at your gorgeous self in the mirror.
A smile is acknowledgement.
A smile is approval.
A smile is free, quick and easy.
A smile is love shown in an instant.
But hey, I don’t need to explain this.
Now other ideas in the video are God inspired ideas like, ADOPT or CHAMPION A CAUSE or CLEAN WATER FOR ALL.
Theses are ones that you cannot tick off your list in a day and require way more than you could possibly imagine. These are long term goals. They will take you way out of yourself. They will be costly and maybe even a little scary. But it starts with a desire for a solution to a problem that your heart won’t let you get away from. That passion then must be fueled with determination, dedication, faith and hard work. And of course the belief that it is truly worth doing.
This list gives some great ideas both simple and complex. Things that can be done on your own or need the help of others.
So let an idea from the list tug at your heart and try something out.
That’s pretty much how I ended up here. Not because someone held up a sign that said BLOG, although maybe I wouldn’t have procrastinated so much if they did….
It was the one that said ENCOURAGE.
Verb – to give support, confidence or hope to someone.
As I stated before, words matter. They hold weight.
The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
The Message translation makes it even plainer,
Words kill, words give life;
they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.
We know this is true. We have felt its effects both ways. I do my best to choose words of hope and help when I’m speaking to people. I can see how it matters. I know there isn’t enough of it in the lives of people around me so, I’m going to do something.
This is my Something. What’s yours?
